Pakistan’s gold market: how to spot fake gold jewelry

Gold jewelry is a popular form of adornment, savings, and family wealth in Pakistan. Rings, bangles, chains, earrings, and bridal sets often carry significant financial value, so a piece that looks genuine may still deserve careful checking before payment. Gold prices change frequently, and high rates can make counterfeit or under-karat jewelry especially costly.

Fake jewelry does not always mean an item contains no gold. Some pieces are gold-plated over silver, copper, brass, or another alloy. Others may be sold as 22-karat gold while containing a lower percentage of the precious metal. Learning to recognize warning signs helps buyers make better decisions in local markets, shopping malls, online stores, and second-hand transactions.

A reliable purchase depends on several clues working together: the karat stamp, seller reputation, weight, workmanship, documentation, and professional testing. No single home test can prove authenticity in every case, particularly when a clever counterfeit has been made to resemble real gold.

Understand karats and purity marks

Karat describes the proportion of pure gold in an item. Pure gold is 24 karats, while 22-karat jewelry contains approximately 91.6% gold. Eighteen-karat gold contains about 75% gold, and 14-karat gold contains roughly 58.5%. The remaining material consists of metals added to improve strength, color, and durability.

In Pakistan, 22-karat jewelry is common, especially for bridal ornaments and traditional designs. A stamp such as 916 usually refers to 91.6% purity, while 750 indicates 18-karat gold. Marks such as 999 or 995 generally indicate very high-purity gold, although a stamp alone is not proof that the item is genuine.

Inspect the inside of a ring, the clasp of a chain, or the back of an earring for a purity mark. The number should be clear and professionally engraved rather than unevenly printed or easily scratched away. Be aware that counterfeit items can carry false markings, so the stamp should support other evidence rather than replace it.

Examine the jewelry before paying

Real gold has a distinctive dense feel. If two pieces appear similar in size, the heavier one may contain more dense precious metal, although this is only a preliminary clue. Hollow jewelry, gemstones, intricate shapes, and internal construction can make weight comparisons misleading.

Look closely at areas that receive regular contact, such as edges, clasps, corners, and the underside of bangles. Gold-plated jewelry may show a different-colored metal where the surface has worn away. Greenish, grey, reddish, or dark patches can indicate that the outer layer is covering brass, copper, silver, or another base metal.

Color alone is not enough to identify genuine gold. Alloyed gold can be yellow, rose, or white, and genuine white gold may have a rhodium coating that changes its appearance. A strong chemical smell, loose plating, rough seams, or poor soldering should encourage extra caution, especially when the price appears unusually low.

Use home checks carefully

A magnet test can provide a quick warning sign. Gold is not strongly attracted to an ordinary magnet, so a piece that jumps toward a powerful magnet may contain iron or another magnetic metal. However, many fake metals are nonmagnetic, and some jewelry components, such as clasps or springs, can react differently from the main body.

Ceramic scratch tests, biting tests, and household chemical tests are unreliable or potentially damaging. Scratching a valuable ornament can reduce its appearance, while acid used without training can burn skin, damage gemstones, or produce a misleading result. Water displacement can also be affected by hollow construction, stones, and air trapped inside the item.

The safest use of home checks is to treat them as screening methods. They may reveal an obvious problem, but they cannot establish exact purity. A buyer should avoid damaging an expensive item just to perform an informal test and should move to professional verification when the purchase is significant.

Checking method What it may reveal Main limitation
Purity stamp Claimed karat or fineness Stamps can be forged
Magnet check Some magnetic base metals Many counterfeit metals are nonmagnetic
Visual inspection Plating wear and poor finishing Skilled copies may look convincing
Density or weight comparison Possible differences in metal content Hollow designs and stones affect results
Acid test by a professional Approximate karat level Surface plating can distort results
XRF analysis Metal composition without cutting Equipment and interpretation vary

Rely on professional verification

A reputable jeweler can perform an acid test or electronic assessment, but buyers should understand how the test is carried out. Acid testing usually involves checking a small area of the metal against known standards. If the item is plated, testing only the surface can produce an inaccurate reading, so an experienced tester may inspect an inconspicuous section.

X-ray fluorescence, commonly called XRF testing, is a non-destructive method that estimates the metal composition. It is useful for checking gold, silver, copper, and other elements in an alloy. The result can vary across different parts of a piece, particularly when jewelry has soldered joints, plating, or mixed components.

For a costly necklace, bridal set, investment coin, or inherited ornament, obtain an independent purity check rather than relying only on the seller’s equipment. Ask for the karat result in writing when possible. If the item is intended as an investment, separating its gold value from the value of gemstones and craftsmanship can prevent confusion.

Choose sellers and documents wisely

Buy from an established jeweler with a verifiable shop address, clear return terms, and a history of dealing in precious metals. Ask for a detailed receipt showing the item’s weight, stated purity, making charges, gemstone details, and total price. A vague handwritten slip offers much less protection than an itemized invoice.

Compare the quoted price with the current gold rate, but remember that retail jewelry includes labor, wastage, design charges, taxes, and sometimes gemstone costs. A price far below the normal market level may indicate under-karat gold, plating, stolen goods, or a fraudulent online listing. A seller who refuses testing or becomes aggressive when asked for documentation is a serious warning sign.

Online buyers should examine independent reviews, business registration details, product photographs, delivery policies, and payment safeguards. Avoid sending full payment to an unknown seller through an untraceable channel. When possible, inspect the jewelry and verify its weight and purity before accepting the transaction.

Warning signs that deserve attention

Some signs are particularly important when several appear together:

  • The seller avoids giving a written receipt or refuses to state the purity
  • The jewelry has no mark, has a crooked stamp, or shows different markings in different places
  • The price is dramatically lower than comparable gold jewelry
  • The color changes around edges, clasps, or areas exposed to friction
  • The seller discourages independent testing or insists that a certificate is enough
  • The stated weight includes stones, beads, or decorative parts without a clear breakdown

A certificate can support a purchase, but it should come from a credible testing service and match the item being sold. Check whether the certificate includes the jewelry’s description, weight, purity, test date, and an identifiable reference number. A copied document or generic certificate may have little practical value.

If you discover that an item is misrepresented, preserve the receipt, photographs, messages, payment records, and any test report. Return to the seller in writing and seek help from relevant consumer protection authorities or legal services in your area. Acting quickly makes it easier to establish what was promised and what was delivered.

Protect the value of a gold purchase

Keep gold jewelry, invoices, test reports, and warranty documents in a secure place. Photograph distinctive marks and gemstones when the item is new. These records can help with resale, insurance, inheritance planning, or a future purity dispute.

For a family purchase or major bridal order, involve a trusted person and agree in advance on the required karat, acceptable making charges, and testing arrangements. Weigh the item in front of the buyer and ask whether stones or non-gold parts are included in the displayed weight. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings after payment.

Gold remains valuable because it is durable, recognizable, and widely traded, but its value depends heavily on purity and weight. Before buying in Pakistan’s gold market, inspect the item, question the paperwork, compare the price, and arrange an independent test for any purchase that matters financially. Share these checks with family members and save the documentation so every future transaction begins with better information.
